Gel manicure at home
A gel manicure is color on your own nails that is cured hard under a UV or LED lamp, one coat at a time. It is dry when the tech packs up, it stays glossy, and it lasts two to three weeks where regular polish often chips in a few days. KuQueen does it at your house, and brings the lamp.
Gel manicure vs regular polish
Both give you color and neither adds length. The difference is the lamp, and what the lamp does to drying, wear and removal.
How a gel manicure goes at your house
A table and good light are all the tech needs from you. The tools, the polish and the lamp come with them.
- 01
Shape and cuticle
Your nails are filed to the shape you asked for and the cuticles are cleaned up. The shape guide is useful to look at before the visit.
- 02
A thin base coat, cured
The base is what the color grips. It goes on thin and goes under the lamp for its first cure.
- 03
Two color coats, each cured
Two thin coats rather than one thick one, because a thick coat cures on the surface and stays soft underneath, and that is the coat that peels.
- 04
Top coat, cured, then wiped
The top coat seals the color and gives the shine. Some top coats leave a slightly tacky layer after curing, which is wiped off at the end.
- 05
Cuticle oil
Last, once everything is hard. It is the one step worth copying at home.
Not sure of a shape? The nail shapes guide shows each one. Not sure of a color? Nail colors for morena skin goes through shades by undertone.
Gel polish design ideas
A design goes on in gel and cures with the colour, so it lasts as long as a plain set. These are on short and medium natural nails. Tap one and the booking form opens with that style written in. More in 24 gel polish designs.
Design ideas: these are generated references for a style. None of them shows a KuQueen session, and we do not publish a client’s nails without asking her first.

Making a gel manicure last
Wear gloves for washing up and cleaning. Water and detergent are what lift gel at the edges, not everyday use.
Use your nails as nails. Opening cans and scraping labels with the tip is how a corner starts to lift.
Oil the cuticles every day or two. It keeps the skin around the gel soft, so the grow-out line looks tidy for longer.
More on this in caring for your nails between appointments. If you have heard a Russian manicure lasts longer, that guide explains why and what it involves.
Taking gel polish off
Do not peel it. Gel that is pulled off takes the top layers of your nail with it, and that is the damage people blame on gel itself.
The right way is a soak-off: the shine is buffed lightly, the nails are wrapped with remover, and the softened gel lifts away without scraping. KuQueen does this as Gel Remove, with an optional strengthener after.
A new gel manicure can go on at the same visit, or you can leave the nails bare for a while. See removal and maintenance.
Gel on your toes too
Gel polish for feet is on the pedicure menu, and it suits toes better than hands in one way: toenails grow slowly, so the color lasts longer before a grow-out line shows.
If you want length rather than color, that is an extension. Gel, acrylic, soft gel and dip compared explains which system does what.
Gel manicure questions
- What is a gel manicure?
- A manicure where the polish is gel rather than regular lacquer. Each coat is cured hard under a UV or LED lamp, so it is dry the moment the visit ends and stays glossy for weeks. It colors your own nail and adds no length.
- How long does a gel manicure last?
- Two to three weeks is normal before the grow-out line at the cuticle starts to show. Hands that spend a lot of time in water or cleaning products tend toward the shorter end.
- Is gel bad for your nails?
- Putting gel on does very little to the nail. Taking it off badly is what does the damage. Peeling or picking lifted gel pulls layers of nail away with it, which is what leaves nails thin and bendy afterwards. A proper soak-off avoids that.
- Can I get a design on a gel manicure?
- Yes. Nail art for hands is on the manicure menu and is done in gel, so a design cures hard along with the color. Sending a picture with your booking helps the tech plan it.
- Can I have gel on my toes as well?
- Yes. Gel polish for feet is on the pedicure menu, and a manicure and pedicure can be booked for the same visit.
- What about the UV lamp?
- The lamp is used for a short time on each coat. If you would rather limit UV on your skin, put sunscreen on the backs of your hands before the visit or wear fingerless gloves, and the tech will work around either.
- Is gel manicure the same as soft gel?
- No. Gel polish is color on your natural nail. Soft gel is a pre-shaped tip that adds length. The comparison page sets out gel polish, soft gel, polygel, acrylic and dip side by side.
