A short nail takes a strong color better than a long one. Black, navy, chocolate and a true red all read as deliberate at this length and can look heavy at almond length, which is the opposite of what people expect.
Shape still matters when there is barely any free edge. Squoval keeps the corners and reads tidy, round follows the fingertip and is the kindest to a nail that splits, and a short almond only works if there is enough nail bed to taper.
Short is also the length that survives typing, cooking and a baby, so it is the one that has to last. Gel on a short nail outlasts gel on a long one for the simple reason that there is less of it to catch on things.
