Gel, acrylic, soft gel and dip

Five systems, what each one actually is, how long it lasts, how it comes off and what it does to the nail underneath. The word gel does two jobs in this list, which is where most of the confusion starts: gel polish is a finish, soft gel and polygel are ways of building length.

The bar down each row is the rough thickness that system sits at on the nail. It is drawn to compare them against each other, and it is not a measurement.

Gel vs acrylic, and the three systems beside them

Gel polish

Color only, no length

A polish cured hard under a UV or LED lamp. It adds color and shine to the nail you already have and adds no length at all.

Lasts
Two to three weeks before the grow-out line shows
Comes off
Soaked off with acetone, ten to fifteen minutes
The nail under it
Gentlest of the four, because there is almost nothing on the nail to file through

Soft gel

Pre-shaped tips

A full-cover tip made of soft gel, sized to your nail, glued on and cured. It arrives already shaped, so the length and shape are chosen rather than built.

Lasts
Three to four weeks
Comes off
Soaks off like gel polish, twenty to thirty minutes, no drilling needed
The nail under it
Kinder than acrylic, because the removal is a soak rather than a file

Polygel

Built, lighter than acrylic

A putty somewhere between gel and acrylic, shaped on the nail with a brush and then cured. Lighter than acrylic and easier to shape slowly, because it does not set until it goes under the lamp.

Lasts
Three to four weeks
Comes off
Filed back, then soaked. Longer than soft gel
The nail under it
Sits between soft gel and acrylic

Acrylic

Built, the strongest

Powder and liquid mixed on a brush and sculpted on the nail, setting in air rather than under a lamp. The oldest of the four and still the strongest.

Lasts
Three to four weeks, and it is the one that survives being knocked
Comes off
Filed back and soaked, thirty minutes or more
The nail under it
The most demanding, because the removal is mostly filing and the filing is where damage happens

Dip powder

Also called SNS

The nail is dipped into colored powder between layers of resin. No lamp. Popular because it is quick, and the reason it divides people is hygiene: a shared pot is the thing to ask about.

Lasts
Three to four weeks
Comes off
Soaked off, twenty to thirty minutes
The nail under it
Similar to soft gel if removed properly

KuQueen does not apply this one. We do remove it, so it is here because you may be wearing it.

What KuQueen does, and what it does not

A tech comes to your house with gel polish, soft gel extensions, polygel and acrylic, and takes any of the five off again including dip.

Dip powder application is not on the menu. Gel X is a brand of soft gel tip rather than a separate system and is not listed either, so if that is specifically what you want, say so when you book and we will tell you straight whether we can do it.

If you are not sure which of these you are currently wearing, a photograph sent with your booking is usually enough for a tech to tell, and it decides how long the visit needs.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between gel and acrylic nails?
Gel polish is color on your own nail and adds no length. Acrylic is a sculpted overlay that builds length and strength. The confusion comes from the word gel doing two jobs: gel polish is a finish, while soft gel and polygel are extension systems that happen to cure under a lamp.
Which one is least damaging to the natural nail?
Gel polish, because there is almost nothing on the nail to file through. Of the extension systems, the soak-off ones are kinder than acrylic, and the reason is removal rather than application. Damage in this trade is nearly always done on the way off, not on the way on.
Which lasts the longest?
Acrylic, and not by much. All three extension systems run three to four weeks before the grow-out line is obvious. Acrylic wins on surviving a knock rather than on time.
Is soft gel the same as gel X?
Gel X is a brand of soft gel tip rather than a separate system, which is why the two words get used for each other. KuQueen does not list gel X, so ask when you book if that is what you want.
Can I switch from acrylic to soft gel?
Yes, and the switch happens at a removal rather than a fill. The acrylic comes off, the natural nail is assessed, and if it is thin the honest answer is a break before anything else goes on.
