How to Care for Your Nails Between Appointments

Keep your mani looking fresh longer with these at-home tips from our KuQueen nail techs.

The thing that ends most manicures early

It is rarely the polish. It is the cuticle growing out, which changes the line at the base of the nail and makes a perfectly good set look two weeks older than it is. Cuticle care on its own is a twenty-minute visit, and it buys a surprising amount of time between full appointments.

Dry, overworked hands are the other culprit. The restorative manicure exists for that: a cuticle oil soak, a strengthener base coat, and a hand massage. It is the one to book when nails are brittle or recovering from a set of extensions.

Do not pick at a lifted edge

When gel lifts at one corner, the temptation is to help it along. Peeling gel off takes layers of the natural nail with it, which is what leaves nails thin and bendy for months afterwards.

Gel removal uses a soak-off with light buffing instead of scraping, and it ends with an optional strengthener. Polygel and SNS dip powder come off the same careful way, either soaked or with an electric file depending on the system. Book the removal rather than doing the damage.

What actually extends a set

Gel polish cured under UV or LED is the most chip-resistant option on the list, and it dries instantly, which is the real reason it suits anyone who cannot sit still for twenty minutes after an appointment.

A single broken nail does not need a whole new set. Repairs use silk wraps, overlays or gel fixes depending on the damage. And if you are not sure whether a nail is healthy enough for another set, the nail health consultation is a visual check plus care recommendations.
