Christmas nails

Christmas here starts in September, so a set booked in November is competing with everyone else booking in November. Twenty-four below, from the red you can wear to work in October to the ones that are only for the party.

Design ideas: these are generated references for a style. None of them shows a KuQueen session, and we do not publish a client’s nails without asking her first.

Half of these are a colour and half are painted, and the difference matters when you book. A solid red or a matte burgundy is one visit like any other. Candy cane stripes, tartan and snowflakes are drawn by hand, nail by nail, and December is the month our technicians have least room in, so that is the booking to make early rather than the one to decide on the day.

Red is not one red. The classic blue-toned Christmas red sits cool and bright. Burgundy in matte reads quieter and lasts past the holidays without looking festive in January, which is the practical argument for it. A red French tip gets you most of the way there on a nail too short for anything else.

For simple Christmas nails, start with the last six. A tiny gold star or a small tree on one nail, red and green alternating, a thin red tip or a gold line at the cuticle all look festive with no full art, and they suit short nails.

The ones that survive into the new year are the nudes and the metals. Champagne shimmer, gold tips and ice chrome all read as party on the night and as ordinary manicure the week after, which is worth knowing if you are booking one set to cover both.
