The rule that does most of the work: a nude that flatters is usually a shade or two DEEPER than your own fingertip, not lighter. Lighter is what reads as chalky, and it is what most nudes sold as universal do on brown skin, because they are mixed for a paler hand.
Undertone decides the rest. Warm hands take toffee, caramel and chestnut. Cooler hands take taupe and greige. If you cannot tell which you are, a deep nude sits well on almost everyone and is the safest place to start.
Nude holds up longer than most colors between visits, because the grow-out line at the base is the least visible of any shade. That is the practical reason it is the most asked-for finish on short nails.
