Glossy black on a short nail is the classic. Matte black is softer and more modern, and it shows oil and fingerprints, so it wants a matte top coat refreshed if you wear it long. A black French tip keeps most of the nail bare and is the gentle way in.
Black is also the best background for detail. Gold lines, a single chrome accent or a cat eye band all stand out more on black than on any other base.
The one thing to know: black shows the grow-out line at the cuticle sooner than a pale color does.
